Searching the web for interesting public/urban interventions I stumbled upon many design interventions or art activisms with a swing. It seems people really like to let go and have a bit of playtime during dull everydaylife in urban city greyness.

Poster .....or not

Yesterday we put up around 50 quiz posters in the city centre of cologen.

The Posters were without a sender, which seems to be of little relevance on the first glace.

In comparison to advertisemnet posters or political posters although they are somewahat special, because advertisement usually has a sender and a message that is been transmitted.

Our posters do not prompt to consumption, neither do they transmit a political opinion. The silently invite to interact by filling in the gaps of the sudoku or finding the hidden words in the letter clouds.

The actual poster develops with the interaction by the people.

Some people used the opportunety to fill in their waiting time at the trainstation by doodeling on the posters. Most of them unfortunately were removed already by today.

Moment of Starlings Munich

On november 25th a group called Die Urbanauten arranged a huge mob, or as they call it "swarm" in the city centre of munich. Usually they communicate via sms and twitter.
It was already the second of its kind. Look at their site and videos here. Great stuff!

Park(ing) in San Francisco

This project is from 2005 but I found it the other day and thought thats great. Its done by a group called rebar, an interdisciplinary studio for art, design and activism.

Paint the city

Today we went to the big space infront of the cologne central station with many pots of street chalk and started to draw on the floor.
We didn't have to wait long or do a lot of convincing to get many many people to draw, write something or just laugh and talk with us.
What a beautiful day, happy people and great street artists.

How can fun change peoples behaviour? How can one use the public realm uncommercially?

Design for Public Intervention is a work on intentional and non-intentional transformation of the public space.

The public realm gives space for communication, action and human interaction. How come it is so slanted towards transit and traffic.
In this reasearch I want to find out how designers and non-designers, interventionists, activists, guerilleros and guerilleras can reclaim the public space without being destructive vandalists.
